Super U redesign – feedback welcome!

leave a comment »

As many of you know Super U is the online venue to watch the latest Canadian short films. Viewers enjoy high quality content, qualified by the viewers themselves. Filmmakers enjoy on-site contests and exposure to broadcasters like Super U’s partner Super Channel, Canada’s national pay television network. As Super U grows, filmmakers will share in the advertising revenues generated on the site.

Right now we are looking to improve our site design. We want to make sure we deliver the best product possible for Canadian filmmakers to showcase their films. As a result I am contacting you all to request your feedback. Any help would be appreciated. Pull no punches as we want Super U to be the best it can be!

If you could go to www.superu.ca and ask yourself the following questions:

What do I like about Super U?
What do I not like?
How can the people at Super U make this site better?

Please send feedback to website@superuholdings.com

Thanks!

Why so serious? – Rotten Tomatoes 100 best comedies

leave a comment »

I’ve noticed that I tend to go on tangents about independent films, major studio drama and action flicks, as well as documentaries. Aside from Zack and Miri Make a Porno I have yet to discuss one of my true loves – comedy. Thus doing my research I went around my favorite blogs as well as my favorite movie resource – Rotten Tomatoes. Checking out their list of “Top 100 Comedies” I was actually disappointed. Frankly not a lot of those movies are that funny. They are great films but they are not what I think about when I typically think great comedic effort.

For example #76 on the list is The Truman Show. Although this movie was funny in the first act the movie it soon turned into a drama with deep phycological undertones. I will concede there is an argument to be made for placement in either comedy or drama – and of course there is always the dramedy classification I suppose, however…

How about #77 – Back to the Future. This movie is not even close to being a comedy. I could see maybe placing it in that category if the action/adventure or sci-fi/fantasy classifications didn’t exist. I mean come on, outside of a few moments with Biff and the infamous McFly guitar solo there isn’t a whole lot of laughs there.

Now movies like #64 – This Is Spinal Tap, or #82 – House Party are comedies (side note, I love House Party, but cracking the top 100 comedies of all time?). End of the day a lot of this is up for debate, but the question that keeps burning in my head is what are the people at Rotten Tomatoes thinking? Time to hire some better people for your classification metrics…

Play With Fire

Play With Fire

Hello all you Super U movie lovers!

Today marks my first blog post after taking over for the lovely Jenny as she has moved on in her career.  As a result you will notice a style change in terms of writing when it comes to this blog, which is a tactical way of saying I shall attempt to keep up to the high standards Jenny has left me.  After looking through the previous blog posts as well as many of her other articles I must say this will not be easy but I will do my best to keep you informed and entertained.

And who am I you ask?  My name is Chris and over the years I have bounced around the entertainment industry. Although I have spent time elsewhere it always seems to draw me back in, one way or another. My current position is Special Projects Coordinator here at SuperU.ca, as well as music supervisor / co-producer on a no budget independent film titled, Play With Fire. Once the Play With Fire microsite is up I will post a link, in the mean time check out the facebook group: Play With Fire

I look forward to keeping you up to date on my ramblings about movies and in particular the art of being a movie fan.  Its not always easy, and some may label you a snob, but someone has to do it right?

Somewhere over the rainbow…

leave a comment »

So after a glorious sunny weekend celebrating Pride in Vancouver most of us are likely feeling the crash… Goodbye bottle of Corona¬†on the patio. Hello Start of The Week Blues… where did all those “urgent” emails come from anyways? *Grumble Grumble*

I’ve got good news for Vancouverites though… there’s more opportunity to enjoy the RAINBOW. Check out Hasting Race Course (McGill and Renfrew)¬†for an installement of open air cinema with a viewing of WIZARD OF OZ. The show gets going at 9:35pm. For details on the screening and other outdoor viewings around the Vancouver area you can go to our pal at Miss 604 for details.¬†

After you’ve got your fill of “Somewhere over the rainbow…” don’t forget to check in with Super U tomorrow for our latest film contest… ¬†

Here’s a hint: Show us your own colours and win big! Stayed Tuned…

Vancouver keeps getting “GREENER”

leave a comment »

It must have something to do with all the rain we get in Vancouver (you know its bad when you have to carry around an umbrella in late July – remember last week?) that makes our citizens so damn “GREEN”. With the “Greenist Canadian”¬†title being awarded to a Vancouverite last week and the winner of our “Doc Watchin’ – Enviro Soultions” contest, Carmen Forsberg, residing in the GVRD, you’ve got to wonder what’s the magic secret that keeps us west coasters so intune with the natural world around us‚Ķ
